TERRA KARAVANA
At the center of Tbilisi, a public park with cultural facilities is being built on the former site of the caravanserai.
Project:
Terra Karavana
Year:
2010
Location:
Tbilisi, Georgia

Terra Karavana is a contemporary new urban landscape located on the riverfront at the very heart of Tbilisi. Referring to the old caravanserai on site, the cultural center creates a new dynamic identity for Rhike Park. Access from all sides make this public outdoor space a lively urban center that combines green space and public buildings including a multipurpose event hall, a movie center, a museum, a panorama restaurant and shops. Water fountains, grass fields, sculptures and light installations activate the overall park and invite the people of Tbilisi and visitors day and night to enjoy the panoramic view over the city and its surrounding mountains. Parallel stripes create a dynamic field along the river. The hilly plot offered diversified topographies and possible locations that could be used to the best advantage. A gentle undulating walkway creates a link between the park and upper part of the city while allowing interactions with the building at different levels.
The multipurpose hall, the movie center and the museum are combined in one complex. The main functions meet on a protected elevated terrace. The restaurant on the top floor offers a stunning panoramic view over the park and the city of Tbilisi. Shops on the ground floor open up towards the river. The small hills and undulations in the park will provide for fountains and kiosks. Terra Karavana offers a contextualized modern identity for Rhike Park.
