DROPS
We are absolutely thrilled to have won the art competition for the museum plaza in Quartier G in Ingolstadt. Quartier G – Alte Gießerei in Ingolstadt is already a place of creative future development. The historic foundry hall is currently being transformed into the Museum of Concrete Art and Design (MKKD).
Project:
Drops
Year:
2024- ongoing
Location:
Ingolstadt, Germany
Our design includes a redesign of the plaza in front of the museum, nestled between science and culture, combining innovative landscape planning with artistic strategies. The quality of stay will be enhanced by the design, which features intensive greenery. This project highlights the growing awareness of the importance of green spaces in urban areas to improve the microclimate and biodiversity. A flowing green space that extends across the entire open area of the plaza will be designed with oversized, organic sculptures in the shape of drops. These spatial sculptures serve as striking landmarks, arouse curiosity, and invite people to linger. The drop-shaped sculptures playfully reference the genre of “Drop Sculpture” and recall the site’s industrial past as a foundry.
A pair of sculptures will be placed as a striking gesture at the entrance of the university plaza leading to the city center, while the largest sculpture will be positioned at the eastern end of the plaza. This sculpture guides visitors into the area and highlights the main entrance of the MKKD.
The sculptures are made from waffle structures, crafted from locally grown wood, assembled on-site. Using this renewable resource contributes to sustainability and CO2 reduction, underscoring a commitment to eco-friendly building practices. The construction method of the sculptures allows for extended use in the future. Art installations, light art festivals with projections on the sculptures, and performative events could enliven the entire plaza, defining it as a contemporary urban space that reflects and engages with the media, communication, and technologies of our time.
